What is your problem?
Start here.

You do not need to know the legal name of your remedy. Pick the situation closest to yours.

01

Property & civil

someone is claiming, occupying or selling your land, or you are about to buy

First step: check the papers before you commit money or sign.

What to prepare

Before committing money, have the title chain, patta, encumbrance certificate (EC), property identity and access checked. If you have already signed an agreement, take advice on its obligations before withholding a payment. If someone is occupying your land, keep proof of your possession: tax receipts, photographs, utility bills. If there is threatened sale, dispossession or construction, flag it immediately so the appropriate interim remedy can be assessed.

02

Divorce & family

divorce, custody, maintenance or domestic violence

First step: if you are unsafe, call 112 first. Then keep your records.

What to prepare

Keep marriage records, messages, bank details and your children's school and medical papers. Take advice before you move a child to another city or school, or stop paying support. Courts look closely at both.

03

Commercial & business

unpaid invoices, a bounced cheque, a contract dispute or a bank recovery notice

First step: collect the paper trail and note the dates.

What to prepare

Gather the contract, purchase orders, invoices, delivery proof, ledger, payment records and every cheque and bank memo. Cheque cases and bank recovery notices run on short, fixed deadlines (see below).

04

Bail & criminal defence

a police notice, an FIR, or fear of arrest

First step: note the police station and FIR details, and do not sign anything you have not read.

What to prepare

If you have not been arrested, anticipatory bail may be possible. After arrest in that case, seek advice on the applicable regular-bail procedure. Both depend on the facts and the offences alleged. Tell us if you have already been arrested.

05

NRI & OCI matters

a property or family matter in India while you live abroad

First step: tell us who is acting for you now.

What to prepare

Send any power of attorney, your passport or OCI status, and details of the Indian property or proceeding. A power of attorney must be checked before anyone relies on it.

Where you live does not decide the court. The type of case, the value of the claim and where the property is or the dispute arose do.

Civil suits follow Sections 15 to 20 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908, which deal with the court and the place of filing. Some disputes must go to a tribunal, to arbitration or to a statutory authority instead of a civil suit. The agreement and the relief you want decide that, so check before you file. A wrong forum can cost months.

The official Coimbatore District Judiciary website has case status, orders and cause lists. Check the court name and case number against your papers.

Buying property, running a business or handling a family case in Coimbatore?

Start with the exact location and transaction, not simply the city name. For a purchase in Vadavalli, Saravanampatti, Kalapatti, Thudiyalur or another Coimbatore locality, identify the actual village or ward, survey or town-survey record and approving authority. An advertised address is not enough to reconcile the land with the deed.

For a pre-purchase opinion, use our Coimbatore property title-verification service. If the issue is ownership, possession or an existing suit, our Coimbatore property-lawyer page explains the wider representation. These services answer different questions: document review before a purchase is not the same assignment as contesting a title claim.

For a business account, identify the contracting entity, delivery and payment history before choosing a recovery route. For a family matter, the governing personal law, residence and existing orders determine the forum and available relief. Give the relevant notice, filing or hearing date at the outset; negotiations do not automatically suspend a deadline.

Time-sensitive situations

Which deadlines cannot wait?

Check the stage and the dates. A short delay can change the remedy available.

01

You fear arrest

For a case governed by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, anticipatory bail is sought under section 482 before arrest in that case, subject to statutory exclusions and special-law restrictions. Earlier proceedings may remain governed by the CrPC savings provisions. After arrest, the relevant regular-bail route must be assessed. Do not assume that every accusation permits anticipatory bail.

02

Your cheque bounced

For a cheque issued towards a legally enforceable debt or liability, sections 138 and 142 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 prescribe a written demand within 30 days of receiving the bank’s dishonour information, followed by 15 days for the drawer to pay after receiving the notice. If payment is not made, the complaint period is one month from accrual of the cause of action after that payment period expires. A court may condone delayed complaint filing for sufficient cause; do not assume that this cures a late statutory notice.

03

A bank has taken action under SARFAESI

Section 17 of the SARFAESI Act, 2002 provides 45 days from the relevant section 13(4) measure for an aggrieved person to apply to the competent Debts Recovery Tribunal. A section 13(2) demand notice is a different stage. Have every possession, auction or sale document checked promptly; do not assume that a later step revives time to challenge an earlier measure. See Bank of Baroda v. Parasaadilal Tursiram Sheetgrah Pvt. Ltd., Supreme Court, 11 August 2022.

04

Someone is occupying your land

Article 65 of the Limitation Act, 1963 generally prescribes 12 years for a title-based possession suit, running from when the defendant’s possession becomes adverse to the plaintiff. Twelve years of occupation alone does not prove ownership: the requirements of adverse possession must be established. In Ravinder Kaur Grewal v. Manjit Kaur (Supreme Court, 7 August 2019), the Court recognised that perfected adverse-possession title can support a suit. Special rules, government land and other remedies may involve different periods. Do not treat 12 years as permission to wait.

Sending a notice or negotiating does not automatically stop the clock. Have the dates checked against your actual papers.

From enquiry to engagement

What happens when you contact us?

We first identify the work needed and agree its scope and fee.

  1. Explain the issue. Give the parties, location, key dates and the result you are seeking.
  2. Arrange the review. The office confirms the consultation or document-review scope, fee and papers required. Use the agreed channel for sensitive records.
  3. Consider the legal route. The assessment addresses evidence, the competent forum, relevant dates and any immediate application.
  4. Confirm further work. Advice, drafting, negotiation, filing and appearances proceed under the accepted engagement.

A consultation may end with advice or a document check. Litigation is recommended when the facts and the available remedy justify it.

Choose the first step

When is going to court not the right first step?

Not every problem needs a case. A legal notice or negotiated proposal may resolve a dispute, but neither guarantees settlement. A document may only need correction, or accounts may need reconciling. Many consumer complaints can be filed at the District Commission without a lawyer. Checking title before buying can identify issues before you commit money or take on contractual obligations.

If you are buying property and want help with site visits and coordination as well, Aadhan Property is a separate buyer-side advisory service. Legal advice is a separate engagement with Aadhan Law Associates.

Common mistakes that cost people rights or time:

  • Ignoring a notice or summons and hoping it goes away.
  • Paying an advance before the title chain, patta and EC are checked.
  • Sending a late or vague cheque notice.
  • Replying in anger, or admitting liability before checking the records.
  • Showing your lawyer only the documents that help you.
  • Asking for anticipatory bail after the arrest has happened.

Questions about hiring a lawyer in Coimbatore

Office visits, fees, documents and the first legal step.

01How do I choose a lawyer in Coimbatore?

Choose by your problem, not by advertisements. Ask which court your case belongs in, who will actually appear, what papers they need and how the fee is fixed. Be careful with anyone who promises a result or a date, because no lawyer controls a court's decision. Take your papers to the first meeting and ask for the next step.

02Where is the Coimbatore District Court?

The Coimbatore District Combined Court Complex is at Gopalapuram, Coimbatore 641018. The district court's official website lists the Principal District Court, Additional District Courts, Sub Court, Munsif Courts, Family Courts and Labour Court. The Debts Recovery Tribunal and the District Consumer Commission are separate offices in the same 641018 area. Check your court number on eCourts before you travel.

03Which court hears a property dispute in Coimbatore?

Property suits go to the civil courts, mostly at the Combined Court Complex, Gopalapuram. Which court hears yours depends on the value of the claim, the relief you want (possession, declaration or injunction) and where the land is. Land outside the city may fall within another court’s territorial jurisdiction, including taluk courts. Confirm the court before you file.

04Where are divorce and custody cases filed in Coimbatore?

Coimbatore’s official directory lists a Principal Family Court and an Additional Family Court for matters within their jurisdiction. Other courts may handle connected statutory proceedings. The right place usually depends on the marriage law that applies and on where the spouses married, last lived together or now live. A petition filed in the wrong place can be returned, so confirm the venue before you file.

05Can I get anticipatory bail if I fear arrest in Coimbatore?

Anticipatory bail is a court direction for release on bail in the event of arrest. Where BNSS applies, section 482 permits an application to the Sessions Court or High Court, subject to statutory exclusions and special laws. Earlier proceedings may attract CrPC savings provisions. It concerns arrest in that case; after arrest, assess regular bail. The court decides whether relief is justified.

06My cheque bounced. How long do I have to act?

The statutory sequence is a written demand within 30 days of receiving the bank’s dishonour information, 15 days for payment after the drawer receives the notice, then one month from accrual of the cause of action to complain if unpaid. Keep bank and service records. Delayed complaint filing may be condoned for sufficient cause; a late demand notice raises a different issue.

07I received a SARFAESI notice from a bank. Where do I challenge it?

An aggrieved person may challenge a relevant section 13(4) measure before the competent DRT under section 17, ordinarily within 45 days of that measure. A section 13(2) demand notice is a different stage. Coimbatore DRT is listed at Jawan’s Bhawan, 27 Travellers Bungalow Road. Send the complete notice and enforcement history; do not rely on an extension of time.

08What should I bring to the first consultation?

Bring everything that shows what happened: notices, summons, FIR or complaint copy, court orders, agreements, deeds, patta or chitta, encumbrance certificate, bank statements and ID. If you have only part of it, bring that with a short list of dates and the result you want. Do not hand original documents to anyone without a written receipt.

09How much does a lawyer consultation cost in Coimbatore?

The fee depends on what you ask for. A first discussion, a detailed review of your documents and a written opinion are different pieces of work. At Aadhan, ask for the fee and what it covers before you book. Also ask whether drafting, court appearances and expenses such as court fees and certified copies are charged separately.

10Can I consult a Coimbatore lawyer online?

You can ask for a phone or video consultation if you live elsewhere in India or abroad. Send your documents first so the call is useful. Tell us where the parties and the property are and whether any case is already pending. Signatures, court appearances and evidence may still need to be handled in person or through someone you authorise.

11Do I need a lawyer before replying to a legal notice?

Get advice before you send a reply that admits facts, offers payment or accepts a settlement. A careless reply can be used against you later. Share the full notice, the envelope or email showing the date you received it, and the related records. Reply periods differ from notice to notice, so read the one you received.
